Its such good news, you should be elated but its also complicated, and really difficult, when you get in but your friend doesnt; or when you get in, but your arch-rival doesnt, and then they start talking shit about you; or, especially, when the shit they talk about you is downright rude, racist, or sexist. I haaaaaaated dealing with this stuff in high school, or rather, I wasnt very good at dealing with it, and so my typical strategy was to pretend that nothing was happening. To be honest, sticking my head in the sand like an ostrich got me through senior year pretty well, although I was helped by the fact that I got to go home and rant to my parents every night. But I know that it isnt that easy for everyone, and even for me, it still kinda sucked. After each round of decisions came out, I hated hearing my name in the hallway, turning around, and seeing people quiet down instead of waving. Most people were just barely too polite to say anything directly to my face, so instead they hinted at me and, Im guessing, waited until I was a few more meters away to say things outright. I was a girl; I wasnt white or Asian (two labels which together described just over 99% of my school); I was an American citizen, uncommon at my Canadian high school. I didnt know how to grapple with these facts, or with the heavy implications people seemed to give them whenever they came up in the context of college. (And senior year, we were  always  talking about college.) When I compare notes with the people I know now, it seems like maybe I didnt even have it that bad: Ive heard from kids who got told outright that they didnt deserve what they got, or that they stole another persons spot. (Let me just say this right now: complete BS. MITs admissions dept. has full confidence in every kid they admitted to kick hella butt. And that goes for tons and tons of kids they didnt admit, too.) I wanted to be able to give you all something to relate to, and maybe some helpful advice, no matter your experience and how different it was from mine. To that end, I did a lil email poll. Here are some (minorly condensed) comments from current and former MIT students, sharing their experiences and advice. (There were also a good few people who said Lol no I didnt have any problems, so if thats you, dont feel alone either :P) I got a low grade on an assignment in a science class and the teacher accused me of thinking I didnt have to try anymore since Id gotten into MIT. I did my best on it, I just did badly anyway. My classmates treated me like I was some sort of infallible genius, which was actually more stressful and embarrassing than flattering. They gave me a nickname combining my last name with MIT, which I grew to dislike. Overall it was just too much of a standard to live up to. I had a friend of my mothers say (to her) that I only got in because I was a girl. My internal response to this was that my SAT score was good enough that I knew that was bullshit and I didnt care what she thought. My mother thought she was jealous because her daughter was not as academically skilled. Id also been singled out for as long as I could remember because I was smart, oftentimes in a negative way, and even though MIT was my first choice as of my junior fall, I knew without a doubt that if I let slip to any classmates where I was applying, and then I didnt get in, everyone would make fun of me and be nasty. Getting rejected/deferred from MIT wouldve broken my heart, and I didnt want to make things worse by allowing myself to get dumped on by the jerks in my high school class. So whenever I was asked, I lied and said I didnt know where I was applying yet. That year, the only two people that got into MIT from my high school were me (a female human) and my best friend A (another female human). We had a close mutual friend R who did all the nerdy stuff with us (math team, science team, concert band geeking, etc.). A few days after regular admissions were announced, I looked over the shoulder of another mutual friend who was IM-ing R only to discover that he was trying to convince this friend that A and I only got into MIT because we were women. Needless to say, we arent friends with R anymore. What a shitty way for a friendship to fall apart. If someone is giving you guff for making it into MIT but not being the next Nobel laureate. Tell them that it doesnt matter what they think, admissions happened, and hopefully everyones happy after the fact; wherever they are going in life. Just ignore it, graduation isnt that far away! But in reality, Please stop, Im the same person I have been up until this point reminding people that youre the same person you were before very quickly after they make a comment of look at miss/mr mit here. Or just telling them Please stop referring to the college I got into. It is none of your business. And then sometimes they wont stop, sometimes they will, but you have the moral highground now. I went back to my high-school post graduation to visit my FIRST robotics team and when someone mentioned during their meeting how I was visiting from MIT I got *applause*. AWKWARD AF. This will continue happening to you: Oh look shiny MIT person. Its something I think you can only have two attitudes about: the get-used-to-it or shut-it-down-immediately-by-telling-people-to-stop. The second one works better as you get older because people are less shitty than highschoolers. It has also driven me to seek out people who *dont* have this reaction , because usually theyre at least smart enough enough to not be impressed with the bare fact that you got into/went to MIT/other fancy school. Because smart people end up everywhere (and so do not so smart people *cough group project partners*) I was lucky to have a supportive group of friends where the sharpest of jokes was MIT kid cant use the copy machine which was true and although embarrassed, I thought it was pretty funny. However, there were always some people who liked to talk down about me. After EA decisions, they would say things like MIT wasnt as good as Caltech or Harvard and I was lame for getting into MIT (although you should have heard them brag about applying to MIT). And of course, the age old she only got in because shes a girl or Chinese, disregarding all the work and effort that I put in to applying to college. I guess I always tried to not acknowledge those comments, but regardless of what I do, it always hurt a little bit. [] I also suffer from caring too much, so even if I could logically tell myself they were maybe just jealous, immature, or ignorant, I cared about how other people perceive me, even if they didnt like me. [] I guess my take away from the hurtful things that happened to me when I got in EA was that asides from an amazing group of people I surrounded myself with [] accept the hurt that other people may bring down upon you. If a friend pushes you away permanently because of this, then theyre not truly a good friend. And if you have any more emotions to spare, be petty. Make it a positive thing that can disprove hurtful comments. Yeah, I might have gotten in because Im a girl, but have you seen my awards in science fair or my robots I help build? I mostly received the hispanic female card. This was mostly from randos or acquaintances at school (small school), but someone who I considered a close friend pretty much said that my admission didnt count because I did MITES ( a minority focused summer camp at MIT, with an admissions rate of about 2-4% at the time I went). I ended up not being friends with him for a variety of reasons, but cutting the toxic people out of my life helped a lot. I guess it helps that as a freshman in a school that draws students from all over the world, you wont have trouble making new friends, so feel free to ditch the sore losers. Learning how to disengage from internalized racism has also helped my overall self worth and self esteem. I hope that some of these stories and pieces of advice are relatable or helpful for you. The HRM focuses more on competitiveness and ethical process of achieving the companys goals. India is focusing more on quality and skilled labour due to the high competition brought by the foreign companies established in India.In India, the process of selecting the best employees is moving towards outsourcing. This is where an expert company recruits employees for other firms. This improves effectiveness and saves time and commitment by the company seeking employees. In Saudi Arabia, recruiting is also gaining new tactics like recruiting process outsourcing. Online based recruiting of employees for Saudi companies is also gaining prominence. This is due to high rate of foreign jobseekers looking for jobs in Saudi firms. This has led to the process becoming more modernized and diverse in it approach (Evans, and Lorange, 1989). It is however not favourable to women, especially foreign female employees in terms of better rights, contracts and other privileges. This problem needs to be looked at more by the MNCs by providing policy guidelines to safeguard women from harsh and weak labour laws so that equality and diversity in human resource is promoted in multinational corporations. Due to high number of expatriates in Saudi Arabia, there is increased investment in the training of local people to enable them get jobs rather than all jobs going to foreign employees. The government is promoting vocational training and generally the level of education. Saudi is also trying to adapt policies that will help at bring in investors to the country (Egan and Bendick 2001). This however, has not encouraged more women to seek employment in areas where men have dominated. India on the other hand is well known for its developed training and education system. This is due to the competitiveness in the labour market in India that demands high quality skills from the employees, thus creating good environment for MNCs to design good policies on diversity and equality in their HRM strategies.Remuneration and reward to employees in Saudi Arabia is not that bad, especially for foreigners seeking jobs in Saudi Arabia, something that MNCs have failed in addressing inequality in salaries, regardless of nationality although it is among countries that pay employees well. However, India does not pay well compared to Saudi Arabia. This is mostly due to high population and therefore high number of job seekers. This is why multinationals open up subsidiaries in India because the labour is cheaper for MNCs thus promoting diversity and equality (Edw ards, Tony Ferner 2004). The minister of labour mostly announces public holidays in Saudi Arabia. The Saudi people observe public holidays on such days like Idd Ul Fitr, which is celebrated by all Muslims. In India, several holidays include the May Day, a national bank holiday, which is just among the holidays that make India the country with the highest number of public holidays. The holidays are also days when workers do not go to work. The two Asian may have public holidays but in some cases, privately employed workers may do not have any holiday, especially foreign employees in Saudi Arabia. This violates equality values in HRM (Egan and Bendick 2001). There are plenty of opportunities in India especially cheap labour. The population is high and education levels are not bad hence providing MNCs a good place to invest and minimize human resource constraints in the organization. Saudi Arabia also has opportunities for growth of the MNCs however, there are many challenges rangin g from human resource, skilled labour, cultural dynamics, and furthermore strict laws that are strange to MNCs in their HRM activities (Bartlett and Ghoshal 1998). In Shakespeare story King Lear, two of the women were portrayed as emasculating and disloyal while the third was honest and truthful. Showing, that most women who have power can’t be trusted. The story told of a king named Lear who had three daughters named Goneril, Regan, and Cordelia. Lear had given his two oldest daughters Goneril, and Regan a piece of land even though they had lied to their father telling him feelings that they didn’t really have. Then there was his youngest daughter she was as honest and truthful as any other child could be. King Lear’s two oldest daughters, Goneril and Regan were liars and were not trustworthy women. They both would do and say anything just to get an edge. Like for example in Act I of the story†¦show more content†¦It all started with Goneril when she had told him that he could live with her, but he was only going to be allowed to bring fifty of his men instead of all his hundred. The King was so upset that he had put a curse on his daughter and went to his next daughter hoping for a change, but the story turned out the same with Regan. She told him he was allowed to only have twenty-five men these two factors made King Lear so upset and outraged that he had claimed that he didn’t want to have anything to do with them two. He was very upset that he had banished his youngest daughter and she was the one that was telling the truth and probably would have taken the best care of him. With this being said this was showing that even though the two oldest girls were given the land and exactly what they had wanted it still wasn’t enough for them and decided to go after their own father just because they wanted to get more out of him. This story had a plot twist in it being that his own two daughters had turned on him after he had trusted them from what they had told him. Sadly the king was not the only one that was being played with by the two scornful women. Goneril had a clever plan in going after Edmund to try and seduce him into thinking that he could have her behind her husband’s back. She had thought she could get him to try killing her

Once employees form friendships the need for self-esteem becomes priority. Needs, such as self-confidence, independence, recognition, appreciation and achievement all fall under this level. Organizational factors such as job title, status items within the organization, such as parking spaces or office size and level of responsibility become important to the employee. Self- actualization: If all the above mentioned needs are largely satisfied, people than spend their time searching for opportunities to apply their skills to the best of their ability. Maslow describes the needs as the desire to become more and more what one is and to become everything one is capable of becoming. Herzberg analysed the job attitudes of 200 accountants and engineers who were asked to recall when they had felt positive or negative at work and the reasons why. From this research, Herzberg suggested a two-step approach to understanding employee motivation and satisfaction, these were hygiene factors and motivator factors. Hygiene Factors: Hygiene factors are based on the need to for a business to avoid dissatisfaction at work. If these factors are considered inadequate by employees, then they can cause dissatisfaction with work. Vroom realized that an employee’s performance is based on individual factors such as personality, skills, knowledge, experience and abilities. He stated that effort, performance and motivation are linked in a person’s motivation. He uses the variables Expectancy, Instrumentality and Valence to account for this. Expectancy is the belief that increased effort will lead to increased performance i. e. f I work harder then this will be better. This is affected by such things as: 1. Having the right resources available (e. g. raw materials, time) 2. Having the right skills to do the job 3. Having the necessary support to get the job done (e. g. supervisor support, or correct information on the job) Instrumentality is the belief that if you perform well that a valued outcome will be received. The degree to which a first level outcome will lead to the second level outcome. i. e. if I do a good job, there is something in it for me. This is affected by such things as: 1. Clear understanding of the relationship between performance and outcomes – e. g. the rules of the reward ‘game’ 2. Trust in the people who will take the decisions on who gets what outcome 3. Transparency of the process that decides who gets what outcome Valence is the importance that the individual places upon the expected outcome. For the valence to be positive, the person must prefer attaining the outcome to not attaining it. For example, if someone is mainly motivated by money, he or she might not value offers of additional time off. The theory has three key elements or concepts that it uses: 1. Performance-outcome expectancy: This means that the individual belives that every behaviour is connected to an outcome, and different levels of that behaviour can be connected to different levels of the outcome. 2. Value: With regard to that, the attractiveness of that outcome depends on the individual, for one, the outcome may be a highly values reward whereas for another, it could be perceived as a punishment. 3. Effort-Performance expectancy: Lastly, individuals evealuate the effort-performance expectancy relationship. In essence, the employee asks himself whether he will be able to perform a specific task and translates those perceptions to probabilies of success. He or she then chooses the behaviours’ that have the highest likelihood of success. Crucially, Vroom’s expectancy theory works on perceptions, so even if an employer thinks they have provided everything appropriate for motivation, and even if this works with most people in that organisation, it doesn’t mean that someone won’t perceive that it doesn’t work for them. It could equally apply to any situation where someone does something because they expect a certain outcome. For example, one recycles paper because they think it’s important to conserve resources and take a stand on environmental issues (valence); they think that the more effort they put into recycling the more paper they will recycle (expectancy); and they think that the more paper they recycle then less resources will be used (instrumentality). Thus, Vroom’s expectancy theory of motivation is not about self-interest in rewards but about the associations people make towards expected outcomes and the contribution they feel they can make towards those outcomes. 5. ADAMS EQUITY THEORY John Stacey Adams, a workplace and behavioural psychologist, put forward his Equity Theory on job motivation in 1963. There are similarities with interpretation of previous simpler theories of Maslow, Herzberg and other pioneers of workplace psychology, in that the theory acknowledges that subtle and variable factors affect each individual’s assessment and perception of their relationship with their work, and thereby their employer. One of the most important issues in motivation is how people view their contributions to the organization and what they get from it. Ideally, they will view their relationship with the employer as a well-balanced, mutually beneficial exchange. As peope work, they realize their consequences of their actions, develop beliefs about outcomes and asses how fairly the organization treats them(Snell A. S. Batemen T. The Adams’ Equity Theory model therefore extends beyond the individual self, and incorporates influence and comparison of other people’s situations – for example colleagues and friends – in forming a comparative view and awareness of Equity, which commonly manifests as a sense of what is fair. When people feel fairly or advantageously treated they are more likely to be motivated, when they feel unfairly treated they are highly prone to feelings of disaffection and demotivation. The way that people measure this sense of fairness is at the heart of Equity Theory. Equity, and thereby the motivational situation we might seek to assess using the model, is not dependent on the extent to which a person believes reward exceeds effort, nor even necessarily on the belief that reward exceeds effort at all. Rather, Equity, and the sense of fairness which commonly underpins motivation, is dependent on the comparison a person makes between his or here reward/investment ratio with the ratio enjoyed (or suffered) by others considered to be in a similar situation. Equity Theory reminds us that people see themselves and crucially the way they are treated in terms of their surrounding environment, team, system, etc – not in isolation – and so they must be managed and treated accordingly. Some people reduce effort and application and become inwardly disgruntled, or outwardly difficult, recalcitrant or even disruptive. Other people seek to improve the outputs by making claims or demands for more reward, or seeking an alternative job. 6. ALDERFER’S ERG THEORY A theory of human needs more advanced than Maslow’s theory is Alderfers ERG theory, meaning that Maslows theory has general applicability whereas Adelfer aims his theory at understanding peoples needs at work. Aldelfers theory builds on some of Maslows thinking but reduces the number of universal needs from five to three and is more flexible in terms of movememy in levels. Like Maslow, Alderfer also believes that needs can be arranged in a heirachy. The ERG theory infers that there are three sets of needs: * Extintence needs are all material and psychological desires. * Relatedness needs involve relationships with other people and are satisfied through the process of mutually sharing thoughts and feelings. Growth needs motivate people to productivity or creatively change themselves or their environment. ERG theory proposes that several needs can be operating at once, whereas Maslow assumes that lower-level needs must be satisfied begore a higher-level need is a motivator. Alderfer lifts this restiction. Accordning to the ERG theory, a higher-level need can be a motivator even if a lower-level need is not fully satisfied, hence several needs can be operating at once. Maslow would say that s elf-actualization is important to people only after other sets of needs are satisfied. Aldelfer maintains that people can be motivated to satisfy both existence and growth needs at the same time. Alderfer agrees that as lower level needs are satisfied, a worker becomes motivated to satisfy higher-level needs, but he breaks down with Maslow on the consequences of need-frustration. Maslow says that once a lower-level need is satisfied, it is no longer a source of motivation, whereas Alderfer suggests that when an individual is motivated to satisfy a higher-level need but has difficulty doing so, the motivation to satisfy lower-level needs becomes higher. McGREGORS THEORY OF X AND Y Douglas McGreggors theory of X and Y is a management based style of theory that tries to expalin different management styles and leadership behaviour within the workplace. McGreggor proposed that the organizations leaders and the organization as a whole has different views on the skills and motivation of the employees of the organization. These potential views can be described as Theory X and Theory Y. Theory X With Theory X assumptions, management’s role is to coerce and control employees. People have an inherent dislike for work and will avoid it whenever possible. * People must be coerced, controlled, directed, or threatened with punishment in order to get them to achieve the organizational objectives. * People prefer to be directed, do not want responsibility, and have little or no amb ition. * People seek security above all else. Realism in Death of a Salesman Realism can be defined as an attempt to reproduce the surface appearance of the life of normal people in everyday situations (Kennedy 1410). Basically realism is a situation that normal people can relate to based on their own experiences. Realism is extremely prevalent in the play Death of a Salesman. The characters in the play all have real world problems. Lack of money is one of the problems, which is a problem for many people. There are also many conflicts within the family; the biggest is over what success is; money and power or happiness. Willy Loman also wants his children to have a better than he has and tries to do everything he can so they will have a better life, including ending his own. One realistic situation that many people can relate to is money problems. Money is one of the main problems that Willy Loman had throughout the play. The Loman family had many purchases on payments. Linda even states "for the vacuum cleaner there's three and a half due on the fifteenth" (Miller 1650). The Loman family was living from week to week. Every time Willy came home from a fairly successful day selling, he would think he was finally getting ahead. Willy would tell Linda how much he had made, but she would then point out how much they owed on everything. Willy then felt overwhelmed and said "My God, if business don't pick up I don't know what I'm gonna do!" (1650). Linda would then reassure Willy and tell him "Well, next week you'll do better" (1650). Many people in real life have this same problem. Every time they feel they are getting ahead financially, a problem occurs and they find themselves right back where they started. Most people also have to deal with problems and conflicts within their family throughout their life. Family problems were not exempt from the characters in Death of a Salesman. Biff's idea of success was completely opposite from Willy's. Willy viewed success as achieving money and power; Biff however viewed success in life as being happy. Biff realized that "I'm just what I am, that's all" (1703). Biff realized he was "a dime a dozen" (1703), but his father could not accept this reality. This situation where parents always keep telling their children what else they could be is common in many families. In actuality the children are where they want to be in life, but the parents just cannot accept their children's contentment. Biff spent most of his life trying to please Willy, but Biff finally realized that he never could. He was what he was. The most realistic part of the play may have been about how much Willy loved his children and how he wanted their life to be better than his own. Willy raised his children the best he could. The character Ben even seemed to appear when Willy was trying to make a decision on how to make the boys lives better. This situation with Ben makes it appear that Willy has such a hard time making a decision about what is best for the boys, that he relies on his imagination for an answer. The main reason Willy ends up killing himself is because he thinks it will help Biff start his own business with the life insurance money. Willy did everything with the best of intentions and thought his actions and decisions would benefit his children. Most parents are the same way and will do anything in their power to help their children. When reading Death of a Salesman, most people can relate to the problems of the Loman's.
